I don't really know what it is, or if I'll use it but I have done about five of these sorts of things now. I did it one night to get myself used to drawing and now I do them all the time. I plan to start my self portrait tomorrow.
Hey!!! Thanks for posting a sample of your work. I'm glad to hear you have done several. Sometimes that's the best way to get to where you are going visually. As I look at it, it is interesting, but somehow doesn't quite look finished yet. It has text (which I like in many pieces, although not all work) it has paint (which helps visually tie things together in pieces like this) and it has cut paper. Each of these elements I like. You are good with the paint application Carling! Text is effective if done well. In a nutshell, when using text, try one of two things: either use it as a background to create some soft detail in the background OR chose to include a limited amount of text that conveys a message but also become part of the overall composition. In other words, the text becomes DESIGN rather than words. The cut paper is working well where you have it. I like the color pallette you are using. I think my quickest response to what I see is: You have 3 different elements (cut paper, paint and text) but they are all very separate and distinct and right now with this piece, are not meshing together well yet. You have chosen colors well and that is very good. You have a lot of movement in your placement of elements in the composition. That is good too. Movement is exciting and engaging. I don't want to see you abandon this exploration! Instead, think about what I am saying here and see if you can work out some of the issues you are having that still need to be resolved. You may need to develop your background more before adding onto the surface. I like your painting style. Maybe you could start with that first, and go from there. In any case, please keep exploring. You will get there!
